Cell phone usage is a big concern for many parents and teachers. At school, teachers notice that students with cell phones and smartwatches are often distracted in class by notifications or keeping their streaks going on social media. Some of our high school students studied their cell phone usage and found they lose hours a day to their cell phones.
At school, we have seen a rise in cyberbullying, even to the level of some students catfishing other students or planning fights. Our school policy is that cell phones need to be turned off and in lockers, but students are constantly trying to sneak them.
Healthychildren.org has a template for setting up a family media plan. A family media plan can help support healthy boundaries with cell phones and prevent some of the issues associated with cell phone usage.
