Winter Middle School Schedule Change

Dear Middle School Parents and Guardians,

I am writing to inform you about an upcoming change to our middle school schedule, beginning on December 2 at the start of the new trimester. This adjustment enhances students' focus and engagement by implementing a condensed schedule with shorter, more frequent class periods. Each subject will be split into two parts across the day, allowing for smaller, focused learning blocks that align with the natural attention span of middle school students.

Why We’re Making This Change:

Middle school students’ attention spans are typically shorter, often between 10 and 15 minutes, making longer blocks of instructional time challenging. With this new schedule, shorter and more frequent periods allow students to refresh and reengage with the material, supporting better retention and reducing fatigue. Additionally, the increased opportunities for movement and activity aim to support a positive learning environment and minimize disruptions.

The schedule will also allow teachers more frequent opportunities to monitor and reinforce positive behaviors. With shorter, twice-daily instructional blocks, teachers can better support students academically and behaviorally, creating a structure that reinforces good study habits and engagement.

Recess Incentive:

To further promote a positive classroom environment, the schedule includes an additional recess between 12:24 and 12:34. This recess will be an incentive for students who have had a constructive first half of the day, offering them a chance to recharge before the afternoon classes.

We’re here to answer any questions you may have and welcome your feedback as we prepare for this transition. Thank you for supporting us as we work together to create the best possible learning environment for our students.

Warm regards,

Shana Lindquist
